Bedding Plants
Though we are primarily a flower and herb farm, you wouldn't know that from our bedding plant selection. You can find every imaginable plant you'd want for your flower, herb and vegetable/fruit gardens. In the early part of the season, HMFF is pretty much a one-woman operation when it comes to producing plants (me, Linda). I've always said, if these plants survive me and the low-tech facilities I raise them in , not to mention the boot camp hardening off process I put them through, they'll survive anyone....and, from what I hear, they do! We're always hearing about how hardy our plants are and how beautifully they produce flowers, herbs and fruits, so I guess I'm doing something right.
Flower Plants
We grow over 130 different varieties of flowers in our gardens, production fields and hoophouses. Many guests see a plant growing in one of these places and delightfully discover that the same variety is available for sale. Just ask! Many annuals and perennials. All very reasonably priced.
Herb Plants
Culinary herbs are a BIG specialty of ours- basil, parsleys, dill, rosemary, cilantro, chervil, oregano, thymes, marjorum, chamomile, mints, sage, lemon grass, savory, tarragon and chives. Also many other beloved herbs- lavender, santolina, anises, catnip, white sage and eucalyptus.
Vegetable/Fruit Plants
We provide more than 16 different varieties of tomato and pepper plants, many of them proven hybrids and heirlooms. You'll also find leeks, eggplant, melons, cucumber, squash and artichoke plants . . . lots of varieties to choose from to help you custom fit a plants growing patterns to your gardening situation. There are informative signs placed next to all our plants at markets and our Open Farm Days, but never hesitate to ask one of us any question you might have.
Spring Farmers Markets
So, where can you find all these great plants? Come to the Bloomington Farmers Market or the Indianapolis City Market in May or June. (See 'Calendar' for more info).
However, if you want to see EVERYTHING that we have available, and also want a lovely drive out to the country, come to our...
Spring "Open Farm" Days
We invite visitors to the Farm on Sundays and Mondays in May and , sometimes( if we're not too tired!) the first Sunday in June. We are open from noon- 5:00pm. If you need directions, please email us and tell us where you'll be coming from. We do have signs posted on the roads in the general area. This is a very relaxed opportunity to see the 'structure' of our small niche farm operation--the fields, the barn work spaces, the hoophouses, our home and all our gardens. The gardens are, of course, a tad young at this time of year, but there are a plethora of perennials that help to green up the acreage. This is a great time to ask Linda or Deryl any gardening questions you might have and to buy the plants you need for the season. We love sharing what i call our "slaves paradise" with any and all. Deryl always says,"Be careful, she'll put you to work!"
