...Starting a New Season...
February 10, 2008
It's looking like i have maybe 2 more weeks of winter leisure left before the 2 hours/day labor i now expend on the farm magnifies to 5-6 hours by the end of the month....and then, come March, i can say goodbye to that lovely day-time reading by the stove.
So, it's with a mixture of regret and excitement that i start each new season in the late winter/early spring....currently i feel mostly the upocoming regret, but once i adjust my days and get my teeth into all the growing projects, the excitement kicks in and it's sometimes hard to stay in bed until dawn to begin working.
The Bloomington Winter Farmers Market is in full swing right now, every Saturday morning , 9:00-noon, at the Harmony School Gymnasium. You'll see us there with our salads, greens, herbs, flowers and micros, as well as 25 other farmers and food producers offering great culinary products to sustain you LOCALLY through the winter months. This market runs through March and then Bloomingtonians return the first Saturday in April to the outdoor market site for local produce and goods.
Be sure to mark your calendars for a trip out here on a Sunday(noon-5:00)in May 2008(see 'Calendar'). This is when you can make a country excursion out to our farm to see the newly planted garden spaces, hoophouses and buy all manner of plants from our diverse offerings. Last season, Deryl took down our faithful old solar greenhouse of 22 years and rebuilt a new one...what a beauty! Twice as big as the old one, three times more insulated and glowingly white and bright. The old solar greenhouse proved to be the nucleus of our offerings at the farm and this new one is already acing that.
The new cobalt blue roof on the barn with it's crowning cedar cupola complete the aesthetic and functional building talents of my wonderful partner Deryl. We are always trying to inprove our farms function and aesthetics and you might enjoy seeing how we've interpreted this value around here.
The emails and phone calls have really started streaming in from 2008 brides-to-be looking for wedding flowers. Last years crop of brides were such a delight to work with and pushed our skill levels several notches higher so that our creations just keep getting more beautiful and creative. If you're getting married in 2008, be sure and contact us soon so we can meet and define what it is you'd like for your special and memorable day.
This year, Harvest Moon Farm has joined 6 other local wedding vendors to offer what we are calling our "Green Wedding Package". All of us are sustainably run businesses. Choose 4 out of 6 of us as vendors for your special day and you'll receive a wonderful gift from each of us. More information on the wedding page...
Meanwhile, come see us at the Winter Market and stay warm and cozy.
